Commuters can look forward to a major convenience as two sections of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway are now ready for inauguration. Initially scheduled for Sunday, the inauguration has been postponed, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the expressway on a new date, which will be announced soon.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Yadav conducted an inspection of the expressway on November 27, after which he instructed the project director and construction agency to finalize the beautification, signage, and painting work.
A team from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) also carried out an on-site survey of the expressway. According to Jagran.com, the inspection focused on addressing technical flaws in the road construction and design.
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which has been constructed at a cost of ₹2,324 crore, was initially scheduled for completion by December 2024. The expressway consists of multiple segments, with two recently completed sections covering a total of 32 kilometers. The first segment, which spans 17 kilometers, runs through Delhi and includes a 6.5-kilometer elevated corridor. The second segment, covering 15 kilometers, passes through Ghaziabad and Baghpat districts in Uttar Pradesh.
This expressway will significantly reduce travel time for commuters, cutting the journey from Delhi to Dehradun to just 2.5 to 3 hours. The 32-km section, starting from Akshardham and connecting to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), passes through key areas such as Laxminagar, Geeta Colony, Shastri Park, Khajuri Khas, and BihariPur, before entering Ghaziabad via Ankur Vihar. While in Ghaziabad, it will pass through Pavi Pushta and Mandola, and then proceed towards Baghpat district.
The full Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will stretch over 210 kilometers, significantly reducing the travel time between the two cities from approximately six and a half hours to just two and a half hours.
This expressway will not only improve connectivity between Delhi NCR and Uttarakhand, but it is also expected to boost tourism in Dehradun. The second phase of the project will cover 118 kilometers, extending from the EPE to the Saharanpur bypass, while the third phase will add 40 kilometers from Ganeshpur to the Saharanpur bypass. The final 20 kilometers will complete the route to Dehradun.
