Lucknow: In a significant move to preserve and promote the historical heritage of Uttar Pradesh, the state government has initiated the transformation of Lucknow’s iconic Butler Palace into a book café and cultural centre.

This initiative aims to create a vibrant space for literature, art, and cultural engagement while maintaining the architectural integrity of the palace.

Built in 1915 by Raja Mahmudabad in memory of Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, the then Deputy Commissioner of Awadh, Butler Palace holds immense historical significance.

To ensure its restoration and adaptive reuse, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has undertaken the project, which will be executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has appointed a dedicated team of experts to oversee the process.

The project, scheduled for completion by March 2025, includes site clearance, structural repairs, façade conservation, electrical upgrades, and operational setup. The restoration team will meticulously preserve the palace’s original design while repurposing it into a cultural hub.

Beyond being a book café, Butler Palace will serve as a dynamic space for exhibitions, workshops, and artistic showcases. Visitors will have access to a well-curated selection of books, along with a café offering refreshments.

The venue will also feature an art gallery highlighting the history of the palace and the region, as well as hosting film screenings, craft fairs, and cultural performances.

To enhance its role as a heritage and cultural centre, the palace will organise a light and sound show, bringing to life stories from Lucknow’s rich history and folklore.

Additionally, collaborations with coaching institutes and cultural organisations will support various educational and artistic programs, making Butler Palace a focal point for intellectual and creative activities.

With this transformation, Butler Palace is set to become a landmark destination where history, literature, and art converge, offering an immersive cultural experience for visitors and residents alike.
