Mumbai: As younger audiences increasingly rely on Instagram Reels, WhatsApp forwards, and YouTube Shorts for their daily dose of news, the credibility of journalism in the digital era is under greater scrutiny than ever before. In the latest episode of the podcast “What India Needs!”, host Shutapa Paul sat down with Rishi Pratim Mukherjee, CEO of JIST Media and Co-Founder of ScoopWhoop, to discuss the evolving face of media and the urgent need to rebuild trust in an AI-powered content landscape.
During the insightful discussion, Mukherjee highlighted how traditional media is struggling to adapt, while newer digital-native platforms race ahead by embracing rapid experimentation in content formats and tone. “Some companies have been in denial till the captain has seen the iceberg,” he noted, emphasizing the disruptive impact of mobile-driven news consumption.
With 71% of Indians now preferring online news and nearly half depending on social media for information, the shift is undeniable. Yet, the pressure to chase virality is creating a culture where content is optimized more for algorithms than truth. “You don’t need a million followers. One topical reel can get two million views,” Mukherjee observed.
The conversation also tackled the role of artificial intelligence in transforming both content creation and misinformation. While tools like AI-generated scripts and voiceovers offer efficiency, they also pose risks. “Fake news was already a problem. AI has only accelerated it,” Mukherjee warned.
Highlighting the need for accountability, both Paul and Mukherjee stressed that regulatory responsibility cannot rest solely with tech giants like Meta and Google. Governments, platforms, and publishers must work together to uphold media integrity.
In closing, Mukherjee affirmed that in the race for relevance, trust remains the most valuable currency. “Your tribe becomes your evangelist if you stay real,” he said, emphasizing that while virality drives reach, credibility drives retention.
The episode, now streaming on Spotify and YouTube, offers a timely reflection on the future of journalism, the evolving media economy, and the essential role of authenticity in the AI age.
