New Delhi: Indian wrestling is poised for a major revival as the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) gears up for its much-awaited return in January 2026, with a renewed emphasis on women’s participation and professional opportunities. After several years of hiatus, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has officially announced the league’s comeback, this time under its direct supervision to ensure transparency and financial accountability.
The 2026 edition will feature six franchises, each comprising nine wrestlers — five Indian and four international athletes. Notably, four categories (53 kg, 57 kg, 62 kg, and 76 kg) will spotlight women wrestlers.
PWL Chairman Dayaan Farooqui described the league as “the beginning of a bold new era for Indian wrestling,” aimed at blending tradition with modern sports culture and creating a platform where homegrown talent can compete with the best in the world.
The new PWL format signifies a turning point for women’s wrestling, offering sustained competition, financial growth, and global exposure through televised events. Experts believe PWL could do for wrestling what the IPL did for cricket — transforming athletes into household names.
Across India, especially in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, more young women are taking up wrestling, inspired by icons like Geeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat. However, challenges persist — limited rural infrastructure, societal barriers, and inconsistent media support still hinder progress.
According to PWL COO Sumit Dubey, the league’s foundation rests on “professionalism, opportunity, and scale,” aiming to build an ecosystem that empowers both athletes and investors. If successful, PWL 2026 could redefine Indian wrestling, turning female wrestlers into national icons and heralding a new chapter of strength, equality, and pride.
