नई दिल्ली: प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की अध्यक्षता में हुई बैठक में ज्ञानेश कुमार को देश का अगला मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त (CEC) नियुक्त करने का फैसला लिया गया। इस संबंध में कानून मंत्रालय ने अधिसूचना जारी कर दी है। 1988 बैच के केरल कैडर के आईएएस अधिकारी ज्ञानेश कुमार मार्च 2023 से चुनाव आयुक्त के रूप में कार्यरत हैं। वह मौजूदा सीईसी राजीव कुमार के सेवानिवृत्त होने के बाद 18 फरवरी को पदभार ग्रहण करेंगे।
मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त की नियुक्ति के लिए गठित सेलेक्शन कमेटी ने उनके नाम को अंतिम रूप दिया। इस कमेटी की बैठक सोमवार शाम को प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की अध्यक्षता में हुई, जिसमें गृह मंत्री अमित शाह और विपक्ष के नेता राहुल गांधी भी शामिल हुए।
राजीव कुमार ने 15 मई 2022 को देश के 25वें मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त के रूप में कार्यभार संभाला था। अपने कार्यकाल के दौरान उन्होंने राष्ट्रपति और उपराष्ट्रपति चुनाव, साथ ही 11 राज्यों के विधानसभा चुनावों की देखरेख की। अब उनकी सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद ज्ञानेश कुमार नए सीईसी के रूप में कार्यभार संभालेंगे और आगामी चुनावों की जिम्मेदारी निभाएंगे।
